The Weight of Fragile Things brings together Gil Batle and Andrés Basurto, two artists whose sculptural practices transform inherently fragile materials through exacting processes of carving, breaking, and reconstruction. Working respectively with ostrich eggshell and broken glass, Batle and Basurto create objects that hold a tension between vulnerability and permanence, destruction and preservation.

For both artists, these materials carry personal histories. Batle’s intricately carved eggshells grew from memories of the nearly two decades he spent in and out of California prisons, while Basurto’s practice with shattered bottles emerged from a far more destructive period in his own life. In their hands, materials associated with fracture and instability become the basis for painstaking acts of making.

Together, the works suggest something less straightforward than redemption: that what has been broken or endured does not disappear, but can be rearranged into something capable of holding a different meaning.
